If you’ve ever watched an E Ink screen refresh and noticed that brief flicker, you’ve witnessed physics at work. Unlike LCDs, which require a backlight, and OLEDs, where pixels are self-emissive, E Ink takes a different approach: it physically moves charged black and white particles inside millions of microcapsules. White particles rise for light areas, black particles for dark ones. The result is that beautiful paper-like readability, excellent sunlight visibility, and almost zero power draw.
Every refresh is a delicate balancing act. Rush it for speed, and you get ghosting; faint shadows of the previous page lingering on screen. Do it thoroughly for maximum clarity, and you get visible flicker and slower response. Different tasks need different performance from your ePaper screen: reading a peaceful novel feels nothing like flipping through richly illustrated ebooks, and studying a complex diagram is entirely different from rapidly switching between apps or casually browsing the web. That’s why Krono offers three thoughtfully tuned refresh modes — Clarity, Speed, and Quality — each optimized for how you actually use your device. Here's a closer look.
#1: Clarity Mode for Balance
Clarity serves as Krono’s elegant default. It delivers the perfect balance for the activities that fill most of your day: reading books, Spark, and managing files. With crisp text and stable visuals, Clarity creates a comfortable, focused experience that feels just right for long reading sessions in both native and third-party reading apps. It strikes a sweet spot between sharpness and responsiveness, making it ideal for thoughtful work without drawing attention to the screen itself

#2: Speed Mode for Dynamic Tasks
When motion and fluidity matter most, Speed mode transforms the experience. Specifically optimized to overcome the traditional lag of ePaper, Speed delivers the lowest flicker of any mode while actively eliminating ghosting as you scroll. It shines during fast-paced activities like browsing information on the web, multitasking between apps, or using Smart Dial to scroll.
Krono automatically switches to Speed when you open most third-party apps. This mode features auto-ghosting removal, keeping your visuals clean even with frequent scrolling.
#3: Quality Mode for Pristine Static Visuals
This mode performs the most thorough refresh cycle, producing the sharpest text, deepest blacks, and lowest residual ghosting. It’s especially powerful when reading richly illustrated content in third-party apps. Imagine turning from a page of clean text to a full-page diagram or artwork: Quality ensures nothing from the previous screen lingers behind. It leaves you with pristine, distraction-free visuals every single time. Whether you’re deeply studying detailed charts, exploring intricate illustrations, or simply want the absolute best clarity for a focused reading session, Quality delivers results worth the brief flash of a deeper refresh.
Krono makes switching effortless. It intelligently starts in Clarity for native experiences and automatically shifts to Speed for third-party apps. Once you choose a mode for a specific app, Krono remembers it for next time. For even better control over ghosting, go to Settings → Display → Screen Refresh Frequency and set a full-refresh interval — such as every 10 taps — so the screen performs a clean sweep automatically.
Krono gives you true choice without compromise. Clarity keeps your daily tasks comfortable and balanced. Speed brings smooth, responsive flow to dynamic moments. And Quality unlocks breathtaking sharpness whenever image quality matters most.
